STILL ON MY MIND: A DEEP DARK SECRET

'Still on my Mind' is a meme inspired by Haley at YA-Aholic
Every Thursday you will feature a book that you read months or even YEARS ago that was so good (or so scary/unique/funny..etc) that it is 'Still on my (your) Mind!'

Please include in your post:

1. The summary of the book (off of goodreads or amazon or whatever!)
2. Make sure you tell us why it is still on your mind, was it super amazing? Super Unique? Super Scary?

A Deep Dark SecretA Deep Dark Secret
by Kimberla Lawson Roby
Hardcover, 192 pages
Published: September 29, 2009
Publisher: William Morrow & Company

*image and Synopsis via Goodreads*

On the outside, twelve-year-old Jillian Maxwell is the perfect child. She's helpful with chores around the house, gets straight As in school, has plans for college, and stays out of trouble. She seems to have everything a girl could want: a big, beautiful new home, an adoring little sister, a mother who cares about her, and an attentive stepfather.

But inside, Jillian harbors a terrible secret.

Too frightened to tell, convinced that her friends and loved ones, especially her mother, won't understand—and worse, will blame her—Jillian endures her pain in silence, believing that things will get better. However, as time passes and her dilemma intensifies, the bright, hardworking girl becomes sullen and disinterested in her studies. Then, just when it seems she's on the verge of losing everything, Jillian discovers she has more strength than she ever imagined…and the power to change her fate.

With sensitivity and grace, Kimberla Lawson Roby addresses a very real and serious issue, while delivering the inspiring tale of one family's mission to shed light into the darkest corner of their lives.

MY THOUGHTS:
This story will always be on my mind. Even though this is a work of fiction, I'm sure that this is something that happens everyday in the lives of some children everywhere in the world. Kimberla Lawson Roby did a very good job of writing this sensitive topic.

GET ME OFF THE SHELF!

Get Me Off The Shelf! is inspired by *From the Review Pile from*Stepping Out of the Page*hosted by Stephanie. This will be a weekly meme on Thursdays.
The aim of this meme is to showcase books that you own, but just haven't got around to reading yet. It could be a book you bought yesterday or years ago. Maybe you even have a few books on your eReader just waiting to be swiped to open the pages.

1. Give a synopsis of the book with image.
2. Tell us why you haven't read the book yet, including when you got the book (if you remember).
3. Link the post in the linky below.
4. Visit other blogs and post!

This week's 'Get Me Off the Shelf' book is on my Kindle:
A Stolen Life
   a memoir

By Jaycee Dugard
Hardcover
Pages: 273
Published: July 12, 2011
Publisher: Simon & Schuster

A Stolen Life

Synopsis via Goodreads:

In the summer of 1991 I was a normal kid. I did normal things. I had friends and a mother who loved me. I was just like you. Until the day my life was stolen.
For eighteen years I was a prisoner. I was an object for someone to use and abuse.

For eighteen years I was not allowed to speak my own name. I became a mother and was forced to be a sister. For eighteen years I survived an impossible situation.

On August 26, 2009, I took my name back. My name is Jaycee Lee Dugard. I don’t think of myself as a victim. I survived.

A Stolen Life is my story—in my own words, in my own way, exactly as I remember it.

MY THOUGHTS:
This is not one of the genres that I usually buy or read. I remembered all the news that the media was giving about her and I really felt so bad for her parent's loss (I was about 20 years old at that time). And then when I heard she was found(18 years later) and the story behind it interest me.

So a year ago when this memoir came out I thought, yes I'm going to buy and read this miraculous story of this one girl's kidnapping, what she went through with her kidnappers, and her rescue.

Well a year later it is still on my bookshelf. I just can't seem to open this memoir and read it. I'm not sure if it's because I know this will be an emotional read for me. Maybe one day I'll get up the courage to.

Like I always say ... I'll get to it one day ... maybe.

So share what's you need to 'Get off your shelf', or floor, or box . . . I love comments! And if you don't, I'll stalk you :)

Hi, I'm Sherri. . . and just to be clear I'm not [Fikt]shun, but I love her blog.

I love to read fiction, so writing reviews of books for a hobby is just an added pleasure to my list of things to do. I just can't read a good book without sharing what I've read. When I'm not reading, I'm writing.
